I must apologize to my blog readers. This last month my blog has been silent and I have not written a new Code Project article either.
This blog entry has some very sad news combined with some of the best news I’ve ever received personally.
My Dad
For the last 16 months my Dad was fighting stage IV lung cancer. Over the last two months he was beginning to struggle in new ways and last Tuesday, 17 June he died. He lived in California, me in North Carolina so I would speak with him 2-3 times a week. I had planned to spend a week with him in August but he went down hill so fast the last 3 days of his life, I didn’t get to see him. I actually had a ticket to fly out the morning of 17 June, but received a call around 4:00am that he was gone.
I’ll miss my Dad very much.
After Code Camp
Code Camp was really a lot of fun and a great time for all. After Code Camp, I taught two Saturdays for the .NET school I attended in 2003, SetFocus. A good bit of time was spent preparing for the classes and teaching them.
New Beginning
During all this time another leaf was turning over in my life. I was asked to join the Cider Team at Microsoft. It was a real joy to tell my Dad that I got a position at Microsoft. He was so very proud and happy for me.
Yes, Karl will begin working at Microsoft on 18 Aug 2008. Trust me, I’m juiced and very thankful for the opportunity that lays ahead.
Between the struggle my Dad had, Code Camp preparation, WPF class preparation, job interview preparation, telling my current employer I’m leaving (I gave 60 days notice), trying to find a replacement for me (still looking), planning a move to Redmond, trying to finish a big project at work, etc, etc, some things got put on the back burner.
This week I’ll be interviewing candidates and then traveling to Redmond for my house hunting trip.
I think by early July, things will be back to normal.
I’m looking forward to writing some very cool code and getting back to blogging and writing Code Project articles.
Close
My Dad was the original computer geek. He started working with mainframes in 1958 and retired in 1997. We were both VAX guys during our careers. He also like writing poems. You can read his early day computer stories, ramblings and poems here: http://ernieshifflett.wordpress.com/.
Have a great day!
Just a grain of sand on the worlds beaches.
